Why Daily SPF Is the Foundation of Anti-Ageing (and What to Layer on Top)
Up to 80% of visible skin ageing comes from the sun. Here's why daily SPF is the foundation of any anti-ageing routine — and what to layer on top.
The single most effective anti-ageing product you can own is also the least glamorous one on the shelf. It's sunscreen. And no active ingredient, however expensive, will outwork a face that goes unprotected.
Here's why. Most of what we read as "ageing" skin isn't really age at all. Research into the visible signs of facial ageing has attributed as much as 80% of them — fine lines, loss of firmness, uneven tone, dark spots — to ultraviolet exposure rather than the passing of years. In other words, the majority of how old your skin looks is shaped in daylight, not by a number on a birthday.
That reorders everything. Before you think about correcting, you have to stop the damage being done.
The science, in brief
Dermatologists call it photoageing: the premature ageing of skin caused by UV light, as distinct from the natural ageing that happens over time. UVA rays reach deep and break down collagen and elastin — the scaffolding that keeps skin firm and smooth — while UVB damages the surface. Both drive the slow oxidative stress that surfaces, years later, as wrinkles, sagging and pigmentation.
The important part: photoageing is largely preventable. Chronological ageing isn't. That's exactly why sun protection is the highest-leverage step in any routine — it works on the 80% you can change, not the 20% you can't.
This is one of the few skincare claims with real proof
It isn't beauty-counter folklore. It's one of the rare skincare claims backed by a proper randomised controlled trial — the gold standard of evidence, and almost unheard of in cosmetics.
In a landmark study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2013, researchers followed adults for four and a half years. One group used broad-spectrum sunscreen every day; the other used it only when they felt like it. The result: the daily-SPF group showed no detectable increase in skin ageing across the entire period — and around 24% less ageing than the group who used it occasionally.
Four and a half years, no visible progression. That's what consistent protection actually buys you.
So why isn't SPF the only thing you need?
Because protection and treatment are two different jobs.
Sunscreen is defence. It stops new damage from being written into your skin. What it can't do is soften the lines already there, replace lost hydration, even out the pigmentation a decade of summers has left behind, or revive a barrier that's become dull and reactive. SPF holds the line. It doesn't move it forward.
Put simply: sunscreen is the foundation. It isn't the whole house.
That's where the rest of your routine earns its place — not as a substitute for protection, but as the work you do on top of it. Protect first. Then treat.
What to layer on top
Treating your skin well doesn't mean a fifteen-step regime. It means choosing the few targeted steps that address what your skin actually needs, layered over your daily SPF.
We've built the Fenicottero range around exactly that, so you can shop by concern rather than guess:
Hydration. A well-hydrated, supported barrier is the base everything else sits on. Skin that holds moisture looks plumper, smoother and more even — and copes better with whatever the day brings.
Brightening. The sun leaves its mark in uneven tone and dark spots long after the holiday's over. Our brightening range is made to improve the look of that pigmentation and bring back clarity and glow.
Anti-ageing. For the appearance of fine lines and a loss of firmness, this is the targeted layer — formulated to help skin look smoother, firmer and more refreshed over time.
Sensitivity. Reactive, easily irritated skin needs a gentler hand. This range supports and calms while still doing the work.
If you'd rather not piece it together yourself, the Fenicottero bundle brings the core routine into one box — a simple, considered set that covers the essentials, at a better price than buying each piece on its own.
(A note on actives: ingredients like vitamin C and retinoids are the workhorses of the "treat" step. The strongest retinoids are prescription-only in the UK and best used under professional guidance — but a well-formulated daily routine gives most skin what it needs to look its best.)
The whole philosophy, in two lines
1. Protect — a broad-spectrum SPF, every morning, without exception. This is the non-negotiable foundation. Reapply through the day in strong sun.
2. Treat — one or two targeted steps for your concern, used as directed, layered into your routine.
Do those two things consistently and you're already ahead of almost everyone: working on the 80% that's within your control, and supporting your skin to look its best while you do.
The most powerful anti-ageing routine isn't the most complicated one. It's the one you actually keep.
Protect first. Then treat — with a routine built around what your skin needs.
